Commission updates smoking lounge ordinance to raise minimum age

MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson City Commission approved Ordinance 3461, raising the minimum age requirement from 18 to 21 for entry into smoking lounges. City staff noted the update aligns the municipal code with recent changes to state law regarding tobacco and nicotine access. The age restriction applies to all related establishments, including those permitting the use of electronic cigarettes and vaping devices.

Commission sets public hearing for south land annexation

MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson City Commission unanimously approved Resolution 26-10, setting a public hearing for the proposed annexation of a tract of land located south of Love's Travel Center. A local ownership entity officially requested the annexation. The public hearing is scheduled to take place in 60 days, tentatively on July 21, 2026, at which point the commission will vote on officially bringing the commercial land into the city limits.

Zoning change approved to pave way for new duplex housing

MCPHERSON, Kan. — To support additional housing in McPherson, the McPherson City Commission adopted Ordinance 3459, rezoning three parcels to an R-2 classification to allow for the construction of new duplexes on the properties. The McPherson Planning Commission recommended the R-2 residential zoning after the developer initially requested an R-3 designation.

New church approved to open near McPherson Hospital

MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson City Commission approved a special use permit allowing a new church to operate at 400 W. Fourth St., located just north of the hospital. Under Ordinance 3460, the church will lease existing space currently occupied by a physical therapy clinic. City officials confirmed no exterior changes will be made to the property, which currently sits in an R-3 multi-family residential zoning district.

Bids set for Hickory Street rehabilitation project

MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson Public Works Department is finalizing bid requests for a street and stormwater rehabilitation project on South Hickory Street. Bids for the project, which encompasses the 300 and 400 blocks of South Hickory and the 600 block of Hayes Street, will be let on June 18. City officials expect construction to begin in mid-to-late August and aim to complete as much work as possible before winter weather halts work.

Police department honors fallen McPherson officers

MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson Police Department commemorated Peace Officer Memorial Day with a cemetery ceremony honoring Martin Grant and Charles Bruce, two local officers killed in the line of duty in the 1930s. Police Chief Mikel Golden noted Bruce was fatally shot while responding to a gas station burglary. The department also hosted an evening service featuring survivor stories presented by the Kansas chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors.

Police chief details state valor awards for fallen officers

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Police Chief Mikel Golden updated the McPherson City Commission on the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police Valor Awards recently held in Mulvane. Golden, who currently serves as the association's president, noted the event honored four Kansas officers killed in the line of duty last year. The ceremony, which drew more than 540 attendees, recognized 96 state law enforcement officers for heroic actions and provided support for the families of the fallen.

City employees organize free laundry day for low-income families

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Three city employees recently graduated from the Leadership McPherson program by launching a project aimed at providing clean laundry for low-income families. Beth Odell and fellow city employees Lauren Przymus and Emily Sanner organized an event scheduled for Aug. 15 at McPherson Express Laundry Center on West First Street. Families with limited or no income will be able to wash their clothes for free during the two-hour event, a project designed to boost confidence for local children heading back to school.
