City approves grant application for $1.2 million trail and sidewalk expansion
1. City approves grant application for $1.2 million trail and sidewalk expansion
MCPHERSON, Kan. - The city of McPherson will seek state funding to expand its pedestrian infrastructure following the approval of a grant application for a nearly $1.2 million trail and sidewalk project. The McPherson City Commission voted to adopt Resolution 26-09, authorizing the city to apply for Kansas Department of Transportation Transportation Alternatives program funds. The grant would support phase three of the Northview multi-use path. If awarded, the federal grant, channeled through the state, would cover 80 percent of the estimated $1,199,000 project cost, leaving the city to cover the remaining 20 percent. Public Works Director Eric Duerksen told commissioners the project will extend the existing trail east along Northview to Maxwell Street. At the Maxwell intersection, the city plans to install a pedestrian crossing equipped with rectangular rapid flashing beacons. From the crossing, the path will transition into a 5-foot sidewalk running south along the west side of Maxwell Street until it connects with existing infrastructure at Darlow Drive, near the north section of the Cedars campus. Officials confirmed the new 5-foot sidewalk will be set back from the street rather than directly adjacent to it, a decision Duerksen said will safely accommodate pedestrians while minimizing the impact on neighboring residents. Existing 4-foot sidewalks south of Darlow Drive will remain unchanged.
