City approves purchase of fire department hazmat suits

MCPHERSON, Kan. - The McPherson City Commission approved the purchase of four Level A vapor-entry hazmat suits for the fire department at a cost of $10,913.35 from Delta Fire and Safety. Fire Chief Chad Mayberry noted the new suits will replace equipment utilized during a hazardous materials incident on the west side of the city in December. City officials noted the city has already received reimbursement for the prior suits from the carrier's insurance company.

19th annual fishing derby set for Lakeside Park

MCPHERSON, Kan. - The city's 19th annual Youth Fishing Derby will take place this Saturday, June 20, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Lakeside Park waterway, which will remain closed to the public this week as staff stock the water with fish. More than 100 people have pre-registered for the event, which is sponsored by the McPherson Parks Department and the McPherson Recreation Commission.

Over 2,000 goldfish, 40-pound catfish removed from Memorial Park pond

MCPHERSON, Kan. - City staff partnered with Culver's Fish Farm, located at 1316 W. Kansas Ave., to clean out the decorative pond at Memorial Park, removing more than 2,000 goldfish and a surprise 40-pound flathead catfish. The fish were safely stored in aerated trucks during the cleanout and will be relocated to Lakeside Park. Officials noted they plan to transition the pond cleaning to an annual schedule to improve conditions and efficiency.

Water park attendance strong amid lazy river repairs

MCPHERSON, Kan. - The McPherson Water Park has welcomed more than 4,000 visitors since opening Memorial Day weekend, despite being closed for five days due to severe weather. City officials noted that painting and repairs to decayed areas of the lazy river are currently underway, and a final overall assessment of the water park facility is expected by the end of June.

Commission approves rezoning for Central Christian College of Kansas expansion

MCPHERSON, Kan. - Commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance changing the zoning classification for 24 parcels owned by Central Christian College of Kansas to a Planned Unit Development district. The zoning change removes a previous protective overlay and streamlines the planning process to accommodate the college's future development and campus expansion plans.

City hires infrastructure data firm to survey street conditions

MCPHERSON, Kan. - The McPherson City Commission approved a contract not to exceed $56,407 with Transmap Corporation to conduct a comprehensive pavement condition survey of all city streets, including cemetery roads. The company will use cameras, lidar, and ground-penetrating radar to assess road thickness and surface conditions, providing data the city will use to create a prioritized five-year street improvement plan and avoid unexpected reconstruction costs.

New stop sign approved for Lincoln and Augustus intersection

MCPHERSON, Kan. - In response to neighborhood traffic concerns and recent speed sensor data, the McPherson City Commission approved the installation of a new stop sign for westbound traffic at the T-intersection of Lincoln Street and Augustus Street. Public works officials noted the new traffic control measure, along with planned tree trimming to improve visibility, will help improve traffic flow and protect pedestrians using the nearby Safe Routes to School sidewalks.

Public hearing scheduled for revenue neutral rate

MCPHERSON, Kan. - The McPherson City Commission will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, July 21 at 8:30 a.m. in the commission room at McPherson City Hall, 400 E. Kansas Ave., to discuss a resolution to exceed the revenue neutral rate for the upcoming budget year. Officials explained that exceeding the rate is a standard annual procedure required to fund basic city operations amid inflation and does not necessarily indicate a direct increase in property tax rates.
