McPherson adopts new floodplain management regulations
Rules require mandatory permits to reduce risks and maintain federal flood insurance eligibility
MCPHERSON, Kan. — The City of McPherson has adopted new floodplain management regulations designed to reduce flood risks to residents, property and local infrastructure. Approved Feb. 17, the updated rules mandate increased oversight of development in flood-prone areas by requiring mandatory floodplain development permits and enforcing strict elevation or flood-proofing standards. City officials said the primary goal of the regulations is to protect public health and safety, minimize future flood losses and ensure McPherson maintains its eligibility for the National Flood Insurance Program.
