Mayfield Fire Chief Jeff Mortimer Receives 2026 Kanokla Community Service Award

CALDWELL, Kan. — Jeff "Mort" Mortimer of Mayfield was named the recipient of the 2026 Kanokla Community Service Award at the Kanokla Annual Meeting Friday, April 24, in Caldwell.

Mortimer has dedicated more than three decades to serving Mayfield and the surrounding area since moving to the community in 1992. Over the years he has served as a City Council member, wastewater operator, road maintainer, equipment caretaker, township blade operator, mower, plumber and volunteer.

He has been a member of the Mayfield Fire Department since its beginning, rising from firefighter to Training Officer, Assistant Chief and now Fire Chief. In that role he has supported surrounding communities through mutual aid. He has also served on county boards and emergency planning committees, and spent years building and supporting fire equipment that helps protect others.

Kanokla's nomination and presentation noted the award recognizes a cooperative member who goes above and beyond.

"Each year, we have the privilege of recognizing a cooperative member who goes above and beyond — someone who sees a need and steps in without hesitation," the presentation said. "This year's recipient embodies the very spirit our cooperative was built on: neighbors helping neighbors, not because they have to, but because they believe in their community."

When asked why he does all he does, Mortimer's answer is simple.

"If not you, who?" he said.
