Marquette youth gain hands-on farming experience through new poultry program

MARQUETTE, Kan. — Local children are learning firsthand how food makes its way to their tables thanks to a $4,200 McPherson County Community Foundation grant that launched a hands-on poultry program for the Marquette Community Food Project. Program creator Jennifer Krehbiel used the funds to purchase 24 incubated eggs and a mobile coop capable of housing up to 40 birds, which allows the flock to be moved regularly for fresh grazing space. With the hens fully matured after the winter, the initiative is now holding its inaugural interactive learning sessions with youth at the Marquette Childcare Center.
