Forging Youth Resilience will host the MacTown Throwdown, a local CrossFit competition and fundraiser, on Oct. 24 at Mac-Town Fitness Company. Proceeds will support FYR’s free youth program in McPherson County.

The competition is open to teens and adults with CrossFit experience, from beginners to experienced athletes. Registration costs $120 and is due Oct. 2, according to FYR Mac Town and Youth Director Meaghan Reamy. Those unable to compete may make a tax-deductible donation through the event’s donation link.

“We need more weights for kids; we need snacks cause we’re supposed to provide them a snack at every class, but we haven’t been. Just a lot more equipment that the kids and teens could use,” Izabelle Burkes, one of the coaches for FYR, said.

Burkes also said the fundraiser revives a competition previously held by the gym and will welcome athletes of different ages and skill levels. She said proceeds will help purchase smaller weights, snacks and additional equipment for participants.

Although the fundraiser will be held at Mac-Town Fitness Company, Reamy said all proceeds will remain with FYR’s McPherson County program.

“All funds that we raise will go towards our club; it’s not going to, like, our national program. They’re going to stay right here in McPherson County,” Reamy said.

Funds will also help cover background checks, coach pay, and a future kitchenette area. Reamy said the kitchenette would support the program’s efforts to provide healthy snacks while limiting processed foods.

Reamy emphasized that FYR and Mac-Town Fitness Company are separate organizations. FYR operates from the for-profit gym but relies on sponsorships, donations, and grants. Money raised through the competition will support only the nonprofit youth club, not Mac-Town Fitness Company.

“Anyone can enroll. What we’re here for, a lot of people do not realize, is that we are one, in the county; two, that we are free to any kid or teen in the county,” Reamy said. “That’s a big thing. The other thing most people don’t realize is that we do more than exercises or workouts in class; we're building resiliency, building grit, and teaching kids how to interact with people they may not see regularly at home, school, or church.”

FYR has operated in McPherson County since 2022. The free program serves children and teens and depends on community support to provide coaching, equipment, snacks, and other resources.
