Local students explore trades at new $30 million Hutchinson YMCA
Summer construction class gets behind-the-scenes tour of new community facility
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — High school students are gaining real-world insight into the commercial building industry after touring the newly built $30 million Hutchinson YMCA.
Students enrolled in the Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy's summer construction class received a behind-the-scenes tour of the 75,000-square-foot facility at 2000 N. Lorraine St. The field trip allowed students to see how the 9.9-acre site was transformed over 18 months into a wellness center, illustrating the community impact of the local construction workforce.
Guided by the project's general contractor, Simpson Construction Services, students examined the range of career paths required to complete the development. The tour showcased skilled trades across the job site, from heavy crane operations and structural concrete work to tile installation and mural painting. Hutchinson Public Schools officials praised the partnership with the construction firm, saying the hands-on exposure provides a valuable opportunity to inspire the next generation of skilled trades professionals in USD 308.
