Local music instructors to perform jazz piano recital at The Cedars
Christina Liu and Brett Janssen will feature works by George Gershwin and Dave Brubeck during the April 25 event
MCPHERSON, Kan. — Music instructors from central Kansas colleges will collaborate for a jazz-influenced, two-piano recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at The Cedars Event Center. Titled "A Hint of Jazz," the performance by Christina Liu and Brett Janssen will feature styles ranging from ragtime and spirituals to blues. The evening's program will highlight works by American composers, prominently featuring a George Gershwin prelude and Dave Brubeck's "Jazz Ballet for Two Pianos."
Liu serves as associate professor and music department chair at Bethel College in North Newton, bringing an international performance background that includes broadcasts on Kansas Public Radio. Janssen, who serves as president of the McPherson Area Piano Teachers League, has taught as an adjunct music instructor at Central Christian College for 15 years and at McPherson College for five years. Together, the two educators represent three central Kansas colleges — Bethel College, Central Christian College and McPherson College — and will bring their extensive classical and collaborative piano experience to the jazz-focused repertoire.
