1. County-Wide EMS Sales Tax Under Discussion
LINDSBORG - Lindsborg city officials are participating in discussions regarding a potential new county-wide sales tax. City Administrator Tanner Faust reported that he and the Chief of Police attended a meeting in McPherson to discuss the proposal, which aims to help fund EMS services for cities within McPherson County as well as its fire protection districts. While few details were available, the administrator confirmed it was a topic that would be a subject of future discussion for the council. The introduction of a new sales tax would have a direct financial impact on all taxpayers in the county.
2. Council Expands Flock Camera System, Citing Success in Crime Solving
LINDSBORG - The Lindsborg City Council unanimously approved expanding its Flock Safety automated license plate reader (ALPR) camera system, citing its effectiveness as an investigative tool. The council authorized a total of $9,650 to renew the subscription for two existing Flock cameras and to purchase and install a third camera. Chief of Police Terry Reed highlighted the system’s value, recounting a case where a hit-and-run was solved using the cameras. A piece of a bumper left at the scene identified the vehicle as a BMW; the Flock system, which integrates with patrol car cameras, found the license plate of a BMW that had been in the area. The system then located the vehicle in Texas with the corresponding piece of its bumper missing. In response to questions about potential misuse, the chief assured the council the system is used almost entirely for investigating crimes after they occur and is not used for traffic violations, with the only real-time alerts being for major issues like Amber Alerts or stolen vehicles.
3. City to Hold Public Budget Meeting on August 18
LINDSBORG - Lindsborg taxpayers will have an opportunity to observe the city’s budget planning process at a special study session scheduled for Monday, August 18, at 5:30 p.m. The mayor announced the meeting date during his report, noting the session will be held prior to the regularly scheduled council meeting that evening. This meeting is a key step in determining the city’s financial priorities and spending for the upcoming fiscal year.
4. Lindsborg Car Show Breaks Attendance Record
LINDSBORG - The recent car show at Swensson Park was a major success, drawing a record-breaking 187 cars. The mayor praised the event in his report, noting the perfect weather and the logistical success of safely managing the large number of participants and spectators. The annual event is a significant draw for the community and visitors alike.
5. Month-Long Art Exhibition Showcases Local Artist
LINDSBORG - The council was encouraged to visit a month-long retrospective of artist John Whitfield’s work currently on display at the Smoky Valley Arts & Folklife Center. The mayor highlighted the exhibition, located at 114 ½ South Main, and recommended the community take the opportunity to see the impressive exhibit throughout August.
