Commission abandons proposed fireworks ban after rainfall

LIBERAL, Kan. — After recent rainfall significantly improved drought conditions across Seward County, the Liberal City Commission opted to take no action on a resolution that would have prohibited fireworks this Fourth of July. The city's fire chief reported that only one-third of the county remains in extreme drought, drastically reducing the fire risk compared to late May. Because the commission declined to pass the emergency ban, fireworks sales and discharges will proceed as permitted by city ordinance, with police and fire departments planning to conduct joint enforcement patrols during the holiday.

Commissioner raises concerns over emergency communications infrastructure

LIBERAL, Kan. — During closing remarks, a city commissioner raised concerns regarding the structural safety of Liberal's emergency communications center, noting the vital facility is currently housed on the second floor of a tin building. The commissioner urged the city and county to prioritize future funding for a more secure, storm-resistant concrete structure or basement, ensuring that 911 dispatch and emergency management operations remain safe and functional during severe weather events.

Floodplain maps timeline targets late 2026

LIBERAL, Kan. — Implementation of Seward County's new floodplain maps is anticipated for late 2026, according to a presentation update from Benesch shared with the city commission. The revised timeline will allow the proposed map changes to be incorporated into a broader countywide study. Once approved and made effective by FEMA, the updated hazard maps will clear the way for future residential and commercial land development and allow some property owners to adjust their flood insurance coverage.

Commission appoints two to library board amid summer programming boom

LIBERAL, Kan. — The Liberal Memorial Library Board gained two new members Tuesday, with the commission unanimously appointing Jose Rodriguez and Jahir Escalante to terms ending in 2030. During the appointments, library representatives highlighted the facility's robust summer engagement, noting that over 500 people attended a recent kickoff party. The library is also continuing its community partnerships to provide free weekday lunches and weekend food backpacks for local children.

City approves $27,000 for new water department mowers

LIBERAL, Kan. — Commissioners authorized the $27,000 purchase of two new Grasshopper mowers for the water department from Keating Tractor & Equipment. The city invoked its 10 percent local purchasing preference policy to select the local vendor, as the bid was within $500 of the lowest offer and promised faster delivery. The new equipment will replace two broken mowers that were 15 and 24 years old. The measure passed 4-0, with one commissioner abstaining.

$56,000 electrical upgrade approved for Well 27

LIBERAL, Kan. — The city will partner with Southern Pioneer Electric to bring three-phase electrical power to Well 27, located at the northeast corner of the local airport, at a cost not to exceed $56,000. Water department staff explained the well's natural gas engine has been broken for more than a year and would cost nearly $42,000 just to overhaul. Upgrading to an electric motor is expected to provide greater longevity and reliability for the city's water infrastructure, with plans to install an emergency backup generator in the next budget cycle.

Demolition continues on former Adventure Bay Family Water Park

LIBERAL, Kan. — City staff reported that demolition of the former Adventure Bay Family Water Park is advancing rapidly, with crews having completely removed the base of the old pool. The site is currently being prepared for standard backfilling and compaction testing. In addition to the park updates, staff announced that local street chip-sealing projects are scheduled to begin in late June or early July, with crews aiming to finish street restriping before the new school year begins.

City launches Movies in the Park

LIBERAL, Kan. — To provide family entertainment following the closure and demolition of the local water park, the City of Liberal will host Movies in the Park. City Manager Scarlette Diseker announced that free, family-friendly movie screenings are scheduled for July 25, Aug. 22 and Sept. 12. The later summer dates were chosen so the screenings can begin at a reasonable hour for families while still offering sufficient darkness for the city's newly purchased sound and projection equipment.

Public transit ridership surpasses 2,000 in May

LIBERAL, Kan. — Liberal's public bus system recorded 2,135 riders in May, maintaining a consistent monthly ridership of over 2,000 individuals. City management highlighted the figures during Tuesday's meeting to emphasize the transit system's vital role in local infrastructure, noting that the buses are heavily utilized by residents commuting to work, accessing local stores and completing daily errands.
