JUNE 8, 1966: NFL AND AFL AGREE TO HISTORIC MERGER

The 1966 merger deal between the established NFL and upstart AFL set the foundation for the modern National Football League, unifying schedules, championships and television rights. All eight AFL franchises—like the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos and New York Jets—were absorbed into the new structure, helping create today’s AFC and NFC conference system.
