Law enforcement, community rally for Special Olympics in downtown Hutchinson torch run

HUTCHINSON — Law enforcement officers, Special Olympics athletes and community supporters carried the "Flame of Hope" through downtown Hutchinson to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics Kansas.

The annual Law Enforcement Torch Run, which coincided with the city's Third Thursday block party, featured runners moving along Main Street from Avenue A Park to DCI Park. Members of the Reno County Sheriff's Office, including the agency's SWAT team, led the procession to champion the competitors.

The Hutchinson run is part of a statewide and global fundraising effort with deep Kansas roots. Founded in 1981 by former Wichita Police Chief Richard LaMunyon, the grassroots campaign has grown into an international movement that has raised more than $1 billion for Special Olympics programs worldwide.

As participants carried the torch through the downtown corridor, officers and supporters emphasized the importance of community backing for the athletes. The relay continues its journey across the state, ultimately culminating in the lighting of the ceremonial cauldron at the Special Olympics Kansas Summer Games.
