1. Walmart Opens First Company-Owned Beef Facility in Olathe, Bringing 667 Jobs
Governor Laura Kelly joined Walmart executives Friday to celebrate the opening of the retail giant's first fully owned beef processing facility in Olathe, a $257 million investment that will create 667 jobs and supply Angus beef to 600 stores across 14 states. The 300,000-square-foot facility will process fresh beef into case-ready cuts for distribution throughout the Midwest. Walmart is also awarding $90,000 in grants to local organizations including Kansas Special Olympics ($35,000), Boys & Girls Club of Greater Kansas City ($20,000), Friends In Service of Heroes ($30,000), and Mayor Bacon's Book Club ($5,000).

2. Ads Urge Moran to Keep Biden-Era Energy Tax Credits to Support Trump Agenda
A new ad campaign on conservative media platforms is pressuring Senator Jerry Moran to retain energy tax credits passed under President Biden, framing them as essential to President Trump's domestic manufacturing goals despite Trump's opposition to the measures. Built for America, led by former West Virginia Republican lieutenant governor Mitch Carmichael, is running the ads on Fox News, Rumble and Truth Social, emphasizing that the credits support American manufacturing jobs and help combat Chinese market dominance in critical technologies.
The advertisements directly appeal to Kansans to contact Moran about preserving the Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit, Clean Energy Production Tax Credit, and Clean Electricity Investment Tax Credit, which face elimination or scaling back in both the House's "big beautiful bill" and the Senate's draft tax legislation. Carmichael insisted the campaign focuses on energy broadly rather than ‘climate ideology’, though the credits also affect electric vehicle incentives and homeowner rebates for climate-friendly appliances.

3. Kelly Warns Federal SNAP Cuts Could Cost Kansas Millions
Governor Laura Kelly warned Wednesday that proposed federal cuts to food stamp funding could force Kansas taxpayers to cover millions in costs or result in benefit reductions for recipients as Congress debates President Trump's budget reconciliation bill. Speaking with reporters alongside other Democratic governors and senators, Kelly called the potential cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program "absolutely regrettable," noting that Republican proposals would require states to share the cost of food assistance programs currently funded entirely by the federal government.

4. WWII Airman Laid to Rest in Wichita 81 Years After Death
Army Lieutenant Herbert Tennyson was buried Friday at Wichita's Old Mission Cemetery next to his wife, more than eight decades after his B-24 bomber "Heaven Can Wait" was shot down over Papua New Guinea in 1944. The lieutenant and his 10 crew members were declared missing in action until Project Recover discovered the crash site in 2017, with artifacts recovered in 2023 finally confirming Tennyson's identity and allowing his long-awaited homecoming to Kansas.

5. Dodgers, Ohtani Visit Sparks Ticket Rush for Struggling Royals
The defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers' weekend visit to Kauffman Stadium, featuring three-time MVP Shohei Ohtani, is expected to draw the Royals' largest crowds of the season with potentially 30,000-plus fans each day despite Kansas City's winless June at home. The series showcases MLB's 2023 scheduling change requiring every team to visit each stadium at least once every two years, bringing baseball's biggest stars to every market.
