Kansas Legislature Mandates 1.5% State Agency Budget Cuts
The Kansas Legislature passed Senate Bill 125 requiring state agencies to reduce their fiscal year 2026 budgets by 1.5 percent, prompting criticism from Governor Laura Kelly who argued the cuts work against government efficiency efforts. House Speaker Dan Hawkins challenged Kelly to propose meaningful alternatives before the next legislative session, warning of additional across-the-board reductions if she fails to do so.

Teen Dies in Solomon House Fire Despite Rescue Efforts
A 17-year-old girl identified as Elizabeth Lillian Ohl died Tuesday morning in a house fire in Solomon after becoming trapped inside the burning structure on West 6th Street. Deputies and firefighters rescued four other occupants but were unable to reach Ohl due to intense heat and smoke before she was found deceased after the fire was extinguished.

Kansas City Woman Charged with Pandemic Benefits Fraud
A federal grand jury indicted 48-year-old Kansas City resident Tiffanie Foster on wire fraud charges for allegedly obtaining fraudulent pandemic relief funds while employed full-time with the Social Security Administration. Foster allegedly submitted altered documents to fraudulently obtain a Paycheck Protection Program loan under the CARES Act, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Kansas Congressional Intern Killed in Washington D.C. Shooting
A 21-year-old University of Massachusetts student serving as an intern in Rep. Ron Estes' office was killed in a shooting in the nation's capital. Eric Tarpinian-Jachim of Granby, Massachusetts, had been working in the Kansas 4th District congressman's Washington office since June and was majoring in finance with a minor in political science.

Former KU Golfer Gary Woodland Comes Back From Brain Surgery, Named Ryder Cup Vice Captain
Former University of Kansas golfer Gary Woodland has been selected as the fifth vice captain for the 45th Ryder Cup to be played in September at Bethpage Black in New York. The 41-year-old four-time PGA Tour winner and 2007 KU graduate received the 2025 PGA Tour Courage Award for returning to competition following brain surgery in 2023.
