Kitchen Fire Causes $70,000 in Damage to Riverdale Home

RIVERDALE, Kan. — A kitchen fire caused an estimated $70,000 in damage to a home in the 500 block of East 76th Avenue North early Friday morning, according to Wellington Fire/EMS.

Crews were dispatched at approximately 5:36 a.m. to a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke pouring from the home and moved quickly to the interior, where they located a fire in the kitchen that had already begun spreading into the walls and up into the attic.

The fire was brought under control and extinguished before further damage could occur.

One individual was evaluated on scene and released. No injuries to firefighters were reported. The cause was determined to be unattended cooking.

Several agencies assisted at the scene, including Fire District 9, Mayfield Fire Department, Sumner County Sheriff's Office, Sumner County Emergency Management and Dispatch, and the City of Wellington Electric Department.

Wellington Fire/EMS used the incident as an opportunity to remind residents never to leave cooking unattended.

"It only takes a second for a kitchen fire to spread into the structure of your home," the department said.
