Kelly Hears from 150 Western Kansas Residents on Budget Priorities
Governor's listening tour includes food drives, discussions on education and healthcare funding.
HAYS, Kan. — Governor Laura Kelly met with nearly 150 residents Wednesday during town halls in Hays and Garden City as part of her statewide "People's Budget" listening tour. Accompanied by Budget Director Adam Proffitt, Kelly heard from approximately 90 people in Hays and 60 in Garden City about state spending priorities and fiscal concerns.
Residents in both communities emphasized the need for continued investment in public education, including full funding for schools and special education programs. Attendees also urged action on Kansas water challenges and support for rural healthcare systems, particularly hospitals and mental health services. Hays residents additionally advocated for rural economic development and early childhood education, while Garden City participants highlighted child welfare and career technical education needs.
The governor simultaneously hosted food drives at both events in partnership with Kansas Food Bank and Harvesters. Hays residents donated 347 pounds of non-perishable items and 17 pounds of infant formula to St. Joseph's Food Pantry, while Garden City contributions went to the Kansas Food Bank's local warehouse. The tour continues Monday in Kansas City, Kansas, with additional stops scheduled for Emporia on November 6. Space is limited at each venue, with entry on a first-come, first-served basis.
