KCC approves $12 million rate increase for Atmos Energy customers

Settlement reduces company's original $19.1 million request; new rates take effect March 1

KCC approves $12 million rate increase for Atmos Energy customers

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Corporation Commission on Thursday approved a settlement agreement allowing Atmos Energy to raise its natural gas rates by $12 million, significantly less than the $19.1 million increase the company originally sought in July. Under the new rates, which take effect March 1, residential customers with average monthly usage will see their bills increase approximately $5.69 per month, or 6.81%, including a fixed customer charge rising from $19.75 to $23.

The unanimous settlement was reached after negotiations between KCC staff, Atmos, the Citizens Utility Ratepayer Board and WoodRiver Energy LLC. The commission found the agreed-upon rates to be just and reasonable, saying they will provide Atmos sufficient revenue to meet its financial obligations while keeping costs as low as possible. Atmos provides natural gas service to 140,000 customers in 110 Kansas communities, primarily in the Kansas City metropolitan area, southeast Kansas and parts of central and southwest Kansas.
