Kansas Rural Center offers virtual farm planning classes

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas Rural Center will host a three-session virtual class series called "Farm Dreams" on Thursday evenings in July to help experienced and prospective farmers develop comprehensive business plans.

The online workshops will focus on clarifying participants' values and quality-of-life goals, assessing readiness to start and operate a farm business, and creating actionable plans for moving forward. The program costs $15 for all three sessions.

"We'll focus on clarifying your values and quality-of-life goals, assessing your readiness to start and run your farm business, and work on creating plans to move forward," organizers said in promotional materials.

The Kansas Rural Center is a nonprofit organization that promotes long-term health of land and people through research, education and advocacy. The group cultivates grassroots support for public policies that encourage family farming and environmental stewardship.

KRC has provided education and resources to farmers since the 1980s Farm Crisis, offering workshops, farm tours and an annual Farm and Food Conference. Recent educational initiatives have included farm beginnings training, high tunnel construction workshops and Women in Farming workshops across Kansas.

The organization's advocacy work focuses on advancing diversified, ecologically-based farm and food systems while supporting independent family farms and healthy rural communities. KRC is a member of the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, which advocates for federal policy reform to advance agricultural sustainability.

Current research projects include a study on farm transition practices in collaboration with Indiana University and a food assessment for Southwest Kansas examining civic agriculture and community health.

The Farm Dreams class is designed for both experienced farmers looking to expand or transition their operations and newcomers considering agricultural careers. The virtual format allows participants from across Kansas to access the training.

Registration information and additional details are available at kansasruralcenter.org/farmdreams.

The Kansas Rural Center's work is supported by public grants, private foundations and individual contributions from those interested in sustainable agriculture and rural community development.
