Kansas Communities Receive $19M in Federal Airport Infrastructure Grants
Three airports across the state will benefit from runway improvements, terminal upgrades and new facilities.
TOPEKA, Kan. — Governor Laura Kelly announced Tuesday that three Kansas communities have secured more than $19 million in federal Infrastructure and Investment Jobs Act funding to improve local airport infrastructure, with matching state funds bringing the total investment to over $20.5 million. The funding will support five projects across Lyons, Newton and Wichita, including runway rehabilitation at Newton's airport, terminal improvements and pavement work at Wichita facilities, and construction of new hangars in Rice County. The Federal Aviation Administration grants, combined with $1.5 million in matching funds from the Kansas Infrastructure Hub and Build Kansas Fund, represent part of a broader state effort that has leveraged over $36.6 million in state matching dollars to secure more than $104.6 million in federal infrastructure grants across 50 projects statewide. "Investing in our airports is crucial for enhancing connectivity and supporting local economies," Kelly said, noting the improvements will strengthen Kansas' transportation network while boosting economic development in affected communities.
