HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — A 54-year-old inmate at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility died Friday after being found unresponsive in his cell earlier this month, the Kansas Department of Corrections announced.

Adan Morales Jr. was discovered unresponsive July 1 in his cell at the state prison facility. Correctional staff immediately began life-saving measures and continued treatment after emergency medical personnel arrived, according to a department statement.

Morales was transported to a local hospital, where he died July 18. The cause of death is pending results of an independent autopsy.

The Kansas Department of Corrections and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are investigating the death, following standard protocol for inmate fatalities in state custody. The investigation remains ongoing.

Morales was serving a 276-month sentence on convictions for rape of a child under 14 and breach of privacy in Finney County.

The Hutchinson Correctional Facility, located in central Kansas, is the state's third-largest prison. The adult male facility has a capacity of 1,788 inmates.

The facility serves as one of Kansas' primary correctional institutions, housing inmates with varying security classifications and sentence lengths.
