Hutchinson police fatally shoot armed man during theft investigation
Kansas Bureau of Investigation launches independent inquiry into Sunday evening altercation
HUTCHINSON — A 30-year-old man died Sunday evening after he was shot by a Hutchinson police officer during a struggle over a handgun, prompting an independent investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
Two officers arrived at 3313 Dartmouth Road around 6 p.m. to follow up on a theft case when the man stepped outside armed with a weapon. According to preliminary KBI reports, a physical altercation ensued when officers tried to detain and disarm the man, who struck both officers before fleeing into the home's garage.
One officer deployed a Taser, causing the man to fall and drop the handgun. However, as the second officer attempted to restrain him, the man reached for and regained the firearm, prompting the first officer to draw a service weapon and fire multiple rounds.
Police and responding Reno County Sheriff's Office deputies provided immediate medical aid until emergency crews transported the man to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
No law enforcement officers were injured during the confrontation, and the KBI expects its inquiry into the fatal shooting to take several weeks to complete.
