The Hutchinson Fire Department has promoted Capt. Wade Mirasol to a newly created position overseeing community engagement, public education and risk reduction program development for the city, according to the department's official Facebook page.

As community risk specialist and external standards manager, Mirasol will also manage the department's external standards to maintain its International Accreditation and the community's ISO Class 1 status — the highest possible fire protection score a city can achieve. That rating directly benefits Hutchinson homeowners through lower homeowners' insurance premiums.

The department also announced its annual school supply drive will run July 24-26 to benefit Reno County children. Firefighters will be stationed at the local Walmart and the Dillons stores on Fifth Avenue and 30th Avenue to collect supplies and cash donations. Residents can also drop off donations early at any Hutchinson fire station, RCB Bank or Midway Motors.
