Hutchinson fire crews join national cancer registry milestone
Department recognized as 'Gold Helmet' agency in 50,000-member federal database
HUTCHINSON — The Hutchinson Fire Department has joined the largest federal study of firefighting-related cancer, with its members becoming part of the first 50,000 U.S. firefighters enrolled in the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer.
The agency was recognized as a "Gold Helmet Department" — a designation for fire departments that enroll at least 50 percent of their active personnel — for officially joining the database, which is operated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to track and reduce cancer risks in the fire service.
Local fire officials are now challenging neighboring departments to match their commitment and enroll to make the research as powerful as possible.
