Hutchinson fire crews extinguish Fourth of July attic fire, rescue cat
The late-night blaze in the 1200 block of West 31st Street caused extensive damage but resulted in no injuries.
A late-night Fourth of July structure fire caused extensive damage to a Hutchinson home, but firefighters extinguished the blaze without any reported injuries and rescued a family cat.
The Hutchinson Fire Department responded to a report of a fire in the 1200 block of West 31st Street at 10:46 p.m. on July 4. First-arriving units found fire on the roof, and entering crews quickly discovered the flames had spread throughout the attic, according to Fire Chief Jeremy Unruh.
Firefighters rapidly accessed the attic and brought the fire under control. The home sustained extensive fire damage to the roof and attic, as well as smoke damage throughout the living areas.
Crews located and safely removed one cat from the structure. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
Several local agencies assisted at the scene, including the Hutchinson Police Department, Reno County EMS, Kansas Gas, Evergy, and the Red Cross.
