Hutchinson fire crew extinguishes garage blaze, 1 hospitalized

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Firefighters contained a structure fire to an attached garage Wednesday morning after responding to the 3500 block of Blanchard Street Southwest.

The Hutchinson Fire Department received the call at 6:55 a.m. and arrived to find heavy smoke pouring from the garage, according to Battalion Chief Justin Holzrichter.

Crews launched an aggressive attack and successfully prevented the flames from spreading to the main residence, though smoke did enter the house. One occupant was transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation. All firefighters on scene escaped injury.

Fire personnel remained at the location after extinguishing the blaze to retrieve equipment and monitor for hot spots in the garage structure.

The fire department thanked multiple agencies that assisted with the response, including Reno County Dispatch, Reno County EMS, the Reno County Sheriff's Office and Reno County Public Works.

The cause of the fire was not immediately released. No damage estimates were available.
