Hutchinson Community College Names Bailey Backhaus Distinguished Dragon

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Bailey Backhaus of Newkirk, Oklahoma, has been named a Distinguished Dragon by Hutchinson Community College after completing her Associate of Science degree while excelling both academically and athletically as a softball player.
Backhaus, a shortstop for the Blue Dragons softball team, demonstrated consistent prowess on the field throughout her tenure at HutchCC. Her agility, strategic thinking and leadership skills made her an invaluable asset to the team, according to her nominator.
"Bailey Backhaus, a talented shortstop for the Blue Dragons softball team, has consistently demonstrated her prowess on the field," her nominator wrote. "Her agility, strategic thinking, and leadership make her an invaluable asset to the team. Her commitment to excellence both in athletics and academics embodies the true spirit of the HutchCC Distinguished Dragons award."
The student-athlete earned recognition on the President's Honor Roll multiple times during her studies and served as a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society. She also participated in Challenge at Crosspoint Church and was a member of the Hutchinson Softball Team.
Backhaus helped lead the Blue Dragons to significant achievements during her time at the college, including winning the region in 2024 and the conference in 2025. She set numerous career records during her two-year tenure with the program.
Her accomplishments extended beyond the softball field. Backhaus was named to the NJCAA Division I Golden Glove Award and became the first Blue Dragon in 33 years to earn NJCAA Division I Softball All-American recognition.
Backhaus credited Coach Jaime Rose for her support and guidance throughout her time at HutchCC.
The Distinguished Dragons award recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in both academics and extracurricular activities, embodying the values and spirit of Hutchinson Community College.
