HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — A local bakery that began with a newspaper employee sharing treats with coworkers has been recognized as the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce's Small Business of the Month for July.

Wooten's Sweet Cakes, owned by Adam and Roseann Wooten, received the award from chamber CEO Debra Teufel. The business officially launched in 2017 after Adam Wooten's casual workplace baking turned into a side business while he worked at The Hutchinson News.

The bakery specializes in custom cakes and desserts for weddings, birthdays and corporate events. The Wooten's offer signature flavors including lemon-blueberry, white chocolate raspberry and cherry-lemonade.

The business has expanded to include two part-time employees and regularly caters events for up to 350 people. This year alone, the bakery has booked more than 45 weddings, sometimes handling five ceremonies in a single weekend.

Wooten's Sweet Cakes serves various local organizations including Heartland Credit Union and Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. The business also provides treats to first responders and healthcare workers.

Roseann Wooten said the company's approach focuses on accommodating custom requests, even with short notice. The business maintained operations during the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain disruptions.

Adam Wooten also volunteers as a chaplain for local law enforcement while running the bakery with his wife.

The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce presents monthly awards to recognize local small businesses that contribute to the community's economic development.
