Hutchinson Art Center showcases local talent, gallery exhibitions

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Art Center's popular Saturday Morning Artists program continues to draw creative participants both in-person and remotely, with the next session scheduled for July 12 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The weekly gathering features live models and maintains a come-and-go atmosphere that welcomes artists of all skill levels. Participants bring $8 and their own art supplies to join the supportive creative community.

Remote participation has expanded the program's reach, allowing artists to work from home using the same model and submit their completed pieces via email to media@hutchinsonartcenter.net by 3:30 p.m. for inclusion in the day's showcase. The center shares participating artists' work on social media platforms at 4 p.m. each Saturday.

This week's featured artists include Scott Vesper, Karen Holliday, Kathie Moore, Betty Jo Houchen, Becky Hogue, Larry Bolton, Peg Stephens and Luke Frederick, representing the diverse talent within the Saturday Morning Artists group.

The center's Front Gallery currently displays work from two featured artists through Aug. 2. Melinda McDaniel, a Wichita resident and community member since 2013, creates mixed media pieces inspired by dreams, meditations and visions. Her artistic journey expanded around 2020, leading to group exhibitions and the publication of "Lily, Are You Out There?" available on Amazon and eBay.

Susan Meyer, who has lived in Hutchinson for approximately three and a half years, brings an international perspective to her work. Previously known as "The Colorweaver," she designed Irish Dance competition costumes throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, shipping creations across the United States and eastern Canada.

Meyer has since diversified into photography, painting, textile art, weaving and handmade journals. Her assemblage art now travels to retirement homes throughout Kansas, where she entertains seniors with her distinctive pieces.

The Saturday Morning Artists program also seeks new models, with information available on the center's website at hutchinsonartcenter.net/sma-modeling.
