Hutchinson Art Center seeks entries, highlights artists

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Art Center is accepting entries for its Emancipation Day Youth Art Contest with a deadline of Saturday, July 19, less than two weeks away.

The contest invites young artists to submit work commemorating Emancipation Day, with entries being accepted at the art center located at 405 N. Washington St. Questions about the contest can be directed to the center at 620-663-1081 or hac@hutchinsonartcenter.net.

Participants can also contact Hutchinson Emancipation Day organizers directly at hutchinsonemancipation@gmail.com for additional information about the contest and related community events.

The art center, which has supported fine arts in Hutchinson since 1949, recently welcomed Akyra Rush as its new Media Manager. Rush graduated from Emporia State University with a bachelor's degree in psychology and is originally from Hutchinson.

"Akyra has a deep love for digital storytelling and is passionate about creating content that connects, inspires, and builds genuine community," the art center stated in announcing the appointment. Rush brings experience in digital media and content creation to her new role.

The center currently features its "Figuratively Speaking" exhibition in the Main Gallery, showcasing artwork from the permanent collection that depicts the human form and various aspects of human experience. The exhibition includes works by Hutchinson artists depicting local scenes from around the Salt City, including holiday parades, the Kansas State Fair and the art center itself.

"One of the various facets of the human experience is community," the center noted about the exhibition. "One of the best examples of this is this grouping of works by Hutchinson artists depicting scenes from around the Salt City."

The exhibition ranges from naturalistic portrayals to abstract scenes and runs through Aug. 1, 2025.

The Hutchinson Art Center, established in 1949, describes its mission as supporting "the fine arts and all the ways creativity enriches life in Hutchinson." The center maintains a 68% recommendation rating based on 15 reviews and can be found online at hutchinsonartcenter.net.
