HutchCC sociology professor recognized for outstanding teaching

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A longtime sociology professor at Hutchinson Community College has been recognized as an "Inspiring Instructor" for her engaging teaching methods and dedication to student success.

Kim Newberry, who has taught at HutchCC since 2003, was honored for her work in courses including Fundamentals of Sociology, Marriage and Family, and Cultural Anthropology. She also serves as an academic advisor for students.

The recognition marks the latest accolade for Newberry, who previously earned Dragon Educator of the Year honors twice, in 2015 and 2020.

Students consistently praise Newberry's ability to connect classroom concepts to real-world situations. One student said she "makes class fun and meaningful," while another described her teaching approach in detail.

"She is a phenomenal educator. She is so engaging and incorporates everything we learn into real life scenarios or things she's experienced to help us really grasp a concept," the student said. "I truly look forward to Sociology days and even find myself wishing class wasn't ending."

The student added that Newberry stands out among faculty members: "She is a truly wonderful instructor, I wish all my professors could be like her. And this is coming from someone who doesn't necessarily always love school."

Newberry holds degrees from Louisiana State University and Kansas State University. Her recognition is part of an ongoing series highlighting outstanding educators at the community college.

The college plans to continue featuring inspiring instructors weekly as part of its recognition program.
