HutchCC alumna returns as recognized inspiring instructor

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson Community College alumna who spent more than a decade teaching at the high school level has returned to her alma mater and earned recognition as one of this year's inspiring instructors.

Amber Carithers, an English instructor who joined HutchCC full-time in 2024, graduated from the two-year college in 2011 before earning her degree from Wichita State University in 2013. She previously taught English at various levels, including at Hutchinson High School, where she was named 2022 Kansas Regional Teacher of the Year.

"She's gone above and beyond to make me and others feel comfortable," one student said of Carithers, according to a college social media post. "She explains everything in ways we can understand."

Carithers brings what the college describes as "a deep passion for student connection and clear, supportive teaching" to her role. Students consistently praise her ability to make class content both clear and relatable, the college said.

Beyond her classroom duties, Carithers leads Tulgey Wood, HutchCC's annual student literary magazine, demonstrating her commitment to fostering creative expression among students.

The recognition comes as part of the college's weekly "Inspiring Instructor" series, which highlights faculty members who make significant impacts on student learning and campus culture.

Hutchinson Community College, located at 1300 N. Plum St., serves students throughout south-central Kansas. The college offers associate degrees and certificate programs across multiple disciplines.

Carithers' journey from student to instructor represents what college officials say is a common thread among their most effective educators — those who understand the institution's mission and student needs from personal experience.
