Commission Approves Funds for Ailing Ladder Truck

HURON - The Huron Fire Department received approval to spend up to $10,000 from its capital asset fund for the initial refurbishment of the city's primary ladder truck. Fire Chief John Miller reported that the vehicle has several "significant issues that aren't safe," including hydraulic hose leaks, water leaks, and electrical problems. The funds represent a starting point for repairs, with costs potentially rising as work progresses. The decision to repair the existing truck comes after officials noted the difficulty and expense of finding a suitable used replacement that would meet the city's bidding requirements.

Third Street Bridge Project Payment Approved Amidst Delays

HURON - A second payment request for the ongoing Third Street Bridge project was approved by the commission. While the payment to BX Civil & Construction was authorized, a firm completion date for the project remains uncertain. Assistant Engineer Dennis Bennett informed the commission that the "mudjacking hasn't gone the way they wanted," causing unforeseen delays in stabilizing the northeast corner of the bridge's sidewalk. Work on the driving surface has been completed, but the stabilization issues must be resolved before the project can be considered finished.

City Issues Major Payment for Lift Station Upgrades

HURON - In a significant infrastructure expenditure, the commission authorized a progress payment of $464,283.92 for the city's ongoing lift station improvement project (Bid 2024-05). Assistant Engineer Dennis Bennett presented the request, which was approved without discussion. The payment represents a substantial portion of the work being done to upgrade the city's critical wastewater infrastructure.

Jersey Avenue to Close for Three Weeks of Construction

HURON - The city announced that Jersey Avenue Southwest, from Wyel Drive to Third Street, will be closed to all traffic for approximately three weeks, beginning September 15. The closure is necessary for a planned construction project. Commissioners noted this will significantly impact local traffic, particularly as Jersey Avenue is often used as a detour when trains block the main crossing. Residents are advised to seek alternative routes during the construction period.

City Honors Retiring Journalist with Proclamation

HURON - Mayor Mark Robish issued a proclamation declaring September 18, 2025, as a day to honor retiring journalist Crystal Pugsley — the Huron Plainsman’s longtime assistant editor. The honor recognizes Pugsley's nearly 45-year career at the Huron Plainsman newspaper, where she has worked since 1980. The mayor lauded her dedication to local journalism, calling it the "backbone on which a functioning society and an informed electorate are based." The public is invited to an open house at the newspaper to celebrate her retirement.
