New Solid Waste Transfer Station Almost Finished

HURON - Huron’s new solid waste transfer station is close to being fully operational. The commission authorized a payment of $25,894.99 to North Star Logistics, LLC, for ongoing work at the facility. Assistant Engineer Dennis Bennett informed the commission that the project is nearly complete, with only minor “punch list items” left to be addressed.

City Bolsters Cybersecurity Defenses

HURON - The City of Huron is taking proactive steps to protect its digital infrastructure from cyber threats. The commission authorized IT Director Chad Borgan to enter into agreements with the SecureSD program, a state-level initiative, for comprehensive security testing and reporting. The move, recommended through the South Dakota Public Assurance Alliance, will allow state-affiliated partners to conduct security assessments of the city’s systems to identify and address potential vulnerabilities.

New Stop Sign Installed to Manage Commercial Traffic

HURON - In response to growing traffic concerns, a new stop sign has been installed on 22nd Street Southeast at the intersection with Kansas Avenue Southeast. The intersection, located behind Tokyo Sushi & Hibachi and near Huron Title Company, experiences a high volume of vehicles from multiple commercial drive-throughs and access points, creating a situation that feels “like a parking lot,” according to Commissioner Shawn Harvey. Officials felt the stop sign was necessary to make drivers more aware of the complex traffic flow and prevent potential accidents.

Parking Restricted on Ohio Avenue SW to Improve Traffic Flow

HURON - The City Commission has implemented new parking restrictions on a portion of Ohio Avenue Southwest to address traffic congestion in a growing residential area. Parking will now be prohibited on the east side of Ohio Avenue SW between 21st Street SW and 22nd Street SW. The commission noted that when cars are parked on both sides of the street, the road becomes too narrow for safe two-way traffic, creating hazardous conditions.

Flashing Crosswalk Planned for 21st Street and Ohio

HURON - As part of its ongoing focus on pedestrian safety, the city will soon install a new crosswalk with flashing lights at the intersection of 21st Street and Ohio. The measure is being taken in response to increased traffic in the area. With school starting this week, the commission emphasized the importance of driver awareness and safety, especially in areas with high foot traffic.
