Unexpected obstructions force change order on water main project
HURON, S.D. - The Huron City Commission approved a $16,670 change order for Menning Excavating regarding the city's water main replacement project. Crews encountered large boulders while boring under Highway 14 near Weibel Drive, necessitating a deeper drilling path and the removal and resetting of a storm sewer to avoid the obstruction. Additionally, crews discovered asbestos cement pipe in an area further east than anticipated, which required specialized handling.
Jersey Avenue closes for railroad crossing repairs
HURON, S.D. - Jersey Avenue Southeast, from Weibel Drive to Third Street, is closed to traffic for construction work within the railroad right-of-way. The closure began Monday, Dec. 8, and is expected to continue through Friday, Dec. 12, depending on how concrete cures in the cold weather. City Engineer Brett Runge noted that the project was delayed due to railroad permitting issues but must be completed now to prevent significant road deterioration and potholes throughout the winter.
Fourth Street reconstruction project finishes under budget
HURON, S.D. - The Huron City Commission approved the final closeout of the Fourth Street reconstruction project with Midland Contracting, accepting a net decrease of $24,563 in the final contract price. City Engineer Brett Runge reported that the project remained under budget even after adding a $20,000 change order to reshape Daypro Road. While the project is financially closed, the contractor is committed to checking and potentially redoing grass seeding in the spring under warranty.
Commission approves $327,000 for township road improvements
HURON, S.D. - The Beadle County Commission approved applications for the Rural Access Infrastructure Fund totaling $327,000 during Tuesday's meeting. The county highway superintendent reviewed the 2026 applications with the board, which cover projects in Barrett, Dearborn, Foster, Liberty, Richland and Theresa townships. The funds are designated for the improvement of rural infrastructure and connectivity.
