City Engineer Brett Runge explained that unused bid items generated the taxpayer savings. Contractor BX Civil & Construction is expected to return early this spring to finish the remaining work, including the irrigation system, with approximately $90,000 left to be paid upon the project's completion.
Ninth Street Southwest closes for paving project
HURON, S.D. - The city commission announced the temporary closure of Ninth Street Southwest from the Highway 37 bypass to the Mountain Dew Softball Complex starting Tuesday, April 21. The closure, scheduled to last through Thursday, April 30, will allow construction crews to pave the roadway, which has historically been gravel. The city encourages drivers to plan alternate routes during the week-and-a-half-long construction period.
Police department seeks $152,634 grant for new portable radios
HURON, S.D. - The Huron Police Department will apply for a fully funded $152,634.70 homeland security-related grant to purchase and program 25 Motorola portable radios. Police Chief Derek Layher told the city commission that the new equipment will provide vital internal and external communication capabilities for officers. If the grant is awarded, the department plans to donate its current radios to the Huron Fire Department to help alleviate equipment shortages.
Swift action contains compost fire at solid waste facility
HURON, S.D. - A compost pile fire at the city's solid waste department was safely contained Friday afternoon without injuries or property damage. The city commission reported that the solid waste department, street department and fire department quickly brought the blaze under control after smoke was spotted at 2:11 p.m. The site remains under constant supervision, and appropriate reports have been filed with the state.
Yard waste collection returns to regular trash days
HURON, S.D. - Huron residents will see a change in their yard waste collection schedule this week, as green yard waste containers will now be picked up on residents' regular trash days. The city commission announced the schedule shift during the meeting, noting that the city had previously been collecting the yard waste bins on Wednesdays over the past few weeks.
City authorizes $48,000 upgrade for aging phone system
HURON, S.D. - Commissioners approved a $48,000 expenditure to replace the city's nine-year-old phone system and unify communications across 85 to 90 percent of municipal departments. An information technology department representative noted that while the cost exceeded the initial $46,000 estimate due to technology changes and vendor implementation fees, the total remains within the department's overall budget and is expected to lower the city's month-to-month communication costs.
Downtown open container area approved for Fourth of July
HURON, S.D. - As part of the consent agenda, commissioners approved a measure allowing the public consumption of alcoholic beverages in downtown Huron for the upcoming Fourth of July festivities. The designation will be active on July 3 and 4 to support downtown celebrations, including the accompanying Fourth of July parade, which also received permit approval during the meeting.
