City announces spring street paving schedule and traffic warnings

HURON, S.D. — The City Commission announced Monday that spring asphalt milling and overlay projects will begin April 20. The construction is expected to last approximately two and a half weeks, weather permitting. Officials warned residents to obey posted "no parking" signs in affected areas, noting that violators may have their vehicles towed at the owner's expense. The engineering department also reminded drivers to slow down and obey all road closure signs to ensure the safety of construction workers as the season begins.

Commissioner Harvey abstains from Southtown Addition lot transfer vote

HURON, S.D. — Commissioner Shawn Harvey recused himself from a vote to transfer ownership of a property in the Southtown Addition to the Greater Huron Development Corporation. Harvey, owner of Montgomery Real Estate, noted his office is handling the real estate transaction for the property, prompting his abstention to avoid a conflict of interest. The remaining commissioners approved the quitclaim deed, which allows the development corporation to manage the lot's construction and eventual sale to private owners.

City transfers Broadland Creek lot for Huron School District Career and Technical Education house project

HURON, S.D. — The City Commission authorized the transfer of a city-owned lot in the Broadland Creek Residential Subdivision to the Greater Huron Development Corporation. Planning Director Barry Cranston noted the property, located at the far north end of the cul-de-sac, will serve as the site for the Huron School District's Career and Technical Education house project. The transfer is designed to shift liability and responsibility for the lot to the development corporation pending its completion and sale to a private owner.

Commission approves new three-year lease for Bergman Arena

HURON, S.D. — The City Commission unanimously approved a new three-year lease agreement with the Huron Hockey Association for the Bergman Arena community activity center. Parks and Recreation Director Chad Schroder explained that the revised agreement, reduced from a 10-year term to allow for more frequent reviews, clarifies maintenance responsibilities and requires the association to pay an annual rental fee plus a percentage of utilities based on player participation. The association, which currently has 154 participants, will also utilize the former parks and recreation office space for its operations.

Initial approval granted for $50 video lottery machine fee

HURON, S.D. — Commissioners unanimously passed the first reading of an ordinance that would impose a $50 fee per video lottery machine operating within city limits. The city is currently compiling an inventory of the machines to coincide with ongoing beer and liquor license renewals. City officials noted that the local liquor association has expressed support for the measure, which is slated for a second reading and final adoption on April 27.

Commission approves unaudited 2025 financial statements

HURON, S.D. — The City Commission unanimously approved the presentation of the city's unaudited 2025 financial statements, clearing the way for the annual legislative audit scheduled to begin the week of May 9. The documents, which include balance sheets for the general fund, governmental funds and enterprise funds such as sewer and garbage, will now be forwarded to state auditors for formal review.

Engineering department authorized to hire intern and updated technician

HURON, S.D. — The City Commission approved personnel changes for the engineering department, authorizing the city to post and advertise for an updated engineering technician position. Additionally, the commission formally acknowledged via the consent agenda that the department's 2026 budget contains sufficient funding to support a new engineering intern position to assist with the city's upcoming infrastructure projects.

Summer seasonal employment approved for city parks and recreation

HURON, S.D. — As part of its consent agenda, the City Commission formally approved 2026 seasonal employment for several city recreation and community departments, effective April 14. The seasonal hires will staff the city golf pro shop, Huron Public Library, Parks and Recreation department and Splash Central Water Park as the city gears up for its busy summer recreation season.
