City approves final payment for airport water main relocation under budget
HURON, S.D. — The Huron City Commission unanimously approved a final payment of $74,813 for the relocation of a raw water line at Huron Regional Airport. City officials noted the line, which feeds both local golf courses, had to be moved because it was located too close to the surface area of a newly constructed parallel taxiway. The project came in well under the initial $81,000 bid, and the relocation is expected to extend the lifespan of the water line while keeping it clear of any future airport construction paths.
Street department to begin fog seal applications on local roads
HURON, S.D. — The Huron Street Department will begin applying fog seal on Wednesday, Oct. 7, to city roads that were either chipped or sealed earlier this year. City officials advised residents that street parking will be strictly prohibited immediately before and after the application process. Residents with questions regarding the roadwork schedule are encouraged to contact Street Superintendent Bob Simpson.
Commission renews funding agreement for James River gauging station
HURON, S.D. — Commissioners approved the renewal of an annual joint funding agreement with the U.S. Geological Survey and the James River Water Development District for the operation of a stream gauging station on the James River near Redfield. The city will pay $1,800 as its share of the three-party agreement. Officials noted the annual cost saw a slight increase of $50 compared to the previous year.
City sets bid opening for annual propane supply contract
HURON, S.D. — The commission authorized Assistant City Engineer Schaun Schnathorst to seek quotes for the city's annual propane fuel supply, which will cover the period from Nov. 1, 2026, through Oct. 31, 2027. The city will publish the request for bids on Oct. 7 and Oct. 14, with a formal bid opening scheduled for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
City offices and solid waste department announce holiday closures
HURON, S.D. — Huron city offices and the solid waste rubble site will be closed Monday, Oct. 12, in observance of Columbus Day and Native American Day. Residents who normally have their garbage, recycling and grass collected on Mondays will instead have their collection shifted to Wednesday, Oct. 14. Residents are reminded to place their containers out the night before, as collection truck routes will not be altered.
Police department seeks new officer following resignation
HURON, S.D. — The Huron Police Department will begin advertising for a new police officer following a recent resignation. The city commission unanimously accepted the officer's resignation, which went into effect Oct. 1, 2026, and officially authorized the department to post and advertise the open position.
