City backs financial assistance application for $12 million apartment complex

HURON, S.D. — The Huron City Commission unanimously approved a resolution supporting an unnamed limited liability company's application for South Dakota Housing Development Authority financial assistance to build a $12 million apartment complex. The proposed development will consist of three buildings housing 27 units each, totaling 81 new units in an unspecified local neighborhood. City officials noted the state funding relies on a point system where local government support increases the project's chances, and the city is currently preparing an associated Tax Increment Financing district to present to the planning commission in October.

Commission approves grant application for $2.2 million Safe Routes to School project

HURON, S.D. — The commission unanimously authorized the city to apply for a Transportation Alternatives grant to fund phase one of Huron's Safe Routes to School sidewalk initiative. If awarded, the city will provide an 18.16% match, covering up to $400,000 of the project's estimated $2.2 million cost. The first phase includes the construction of 16,950 linear feet of 5- and 6-foot-wide sidewalks along unspecified streets near local schools, addressing areas with heavy pedestrian traffic that commissioners noted are currently in dire need of repair.

City initiates FEMA reimbursement process for storm damage

HURON, S.D. — Huron is officially seeking federal reimbursement for June 29 mini-derecho damage following a presidential disaster declaration. The commission unanimously authorized Mayor Mark Robish to sign the initial risk assessment forms required to begin the Federal Emergency Management Agency application process. City officials have already spoken with FEMA Region 8 representatives, who are expected to arrive in Huron in the coming weeks to survey damaged areas and help compile the necessary paperwork.

New downtown brand to be unveiled at downtown revitalization event

HURON, S.D. — City officials announced that a new downtown Huron brand will be officially unveiled during the Dusting Off Dakota event on Saturday, Sept. 26. The brand launch will take place during a 6 p.m. Opening Ceremony and Proclamation in The Roundhouse District. The larger community event, running from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., is aimed at drawing residents downtown to support local businesses and will feature food vendors, a ping-pong ball drop, and a street dance.
