City officials explained that while the Federal Aviation Administration covered the removal and disposal of the existing annexed lines, the federal agency did not fund the replacement costs. The city must complete the costly relocation to maintain essential irrigation and bathroom services at the adjacent municipal golf course.

Assistant City Engineer Dennis Bennett reported that the construction is progressing well, noting that the new facility will be ready for off-season workouts and next season's play.

HURON, S.D. — The city commission authorized an additional $7,800 from second penny reserves for a new restroom facility serving Gibbs Park and Stony Run Park. Parks and Recreation Director Chad Schroder requested the additional funds after the engineering department recommended installing the sewer main and water lines closer to the facility before fully connecting the building's infrastructure.

City acknowledges retirement of longtime fire captain

HURON, S.D. — The city commission unanimously approved the voluntary retirement of a longtime Huron Fire Department captain, effective Sept. 17, 2026. The captain is retiring after more than 32 years of service to the city and the community. Following the approval, the commission also authorized the internal recruitment process to fill the resulting vacant fire captain, fire lieutenant and firefighter positions, noting that external advertising will be utilized if necessary.

Public hearing set for hospital alcohol permit transfer

HURON, S.D. — A public hearing is officially scheduled for Sept. 14, 2026, to consider the transfer of three alcohol permits from Lewis Drug to Sanford Medical Center. The city commission unanimously set the date to discuss the transfer of a liquor license, a wine license and a malt beverage license to the medical facility.

City announces Labor Day closures and trash schedule changes

HURON, S.D. — Huron city offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day, and the solid waste rubble site will close from Saturday, Sept. 5, through Monday, Sept. 7. Monday's regular trash, recycling and yard waste collection will be rescheduled to Wednesday, Sept. 9. Residents are advised to place their containers out the night before, as garbage trucks will not be rerouted.
