HURON, S.D. — The Huron City Commission unanimously approved a $98,750 proposal from a contractor to repair storm damage on the old baling transfer station roof. City officials noted the urgency of the repairs, emphasizing the need to secure the building against the weather before the upcoming transition into the fall and winter seasons.
Fall street paving and milling to begin Aug. 31
HURON, S.D. — City officials announced that asphalt milling and overlay for fall paving will begin on Aug. 31 and is expected to last approximately one week, weather permitting. The construction will affect Long Ridge Avenue Southeast from Third to Ninth streets, Fourth Street Southeast from Simmons to Long Ridge Avenue and 17th Street Southeast from Idaho to Utah avenues. Residents are warned to obey posted no-parking signs, as vehicles parked in restricted zones will be towed at the owner's expense.
Police department secures funding for ballistic shields following inflation delays
HURON, S.D. — Commissioners approved the purchase of five ballistic shields for the Huron Police Department at a total cost of $22,900. Police Chief Derek Layher explained that the department originally received a $21,572 Homeland Security grant for the items in 2025, but subsequent federal delays postponed the purchase, resulting in a 6 percent price increase for the equipment. The commission agreed to supplement the federal grant with $1,328 from city reserves to cover the inflation gap and fully utilize the awarded funds.
City transfers industrial park lot for Mack Metal Sales expansion
HURON, S.D. — The commission unanimously approved a quitclaim deed transferring a West Industrial Park lot to the Greater Huron Development Corporation (GHDC), though the financial terms of the transfer were not immediately disclosed. The transfer of the roughly 4-acre lot and 30,000-square-foot spec building will facilitate a major expansion for Mack Metal Sales. According to GHDC representatives, the expansion will roughly double the building's size, add overhead cranes and create 10 to 15 new jobs over the next two to three years.
