HURON, S.D. - The Huron City Commission unanimously approved a quitclaim deed transferring Lot 15 in the Broadland Creek Residential Subdivision to the Greater Huron Development Corp. (GHDC) to facilitate a pending sale. The decision came despite objections during the public forum from an adjacent property owner, who argued that GHDC was acting unfairly by refusing his full-price offer to purchase the lot to expand his property. While commissioners acknowledged the resident's concerns, they proceeded with the transfer to allow GHDC to finalize its sale to a different buyer.

While discussing a separate residential land transfer, GHDC representative Ted Haeder informed the commission that a purchase agreement has been signed for an additional commercial property located in south Huron. Haeder said the item missed the deadline for the current agenda but will likely appear before the commission next week to allow the sale to move forward.

HURON, S.D. - Following extensive cleanup efforts, the Huron Street Department has officially returned to its regular maintenance schedule. Crews have successfully cleared all city alleys of tree debris, making two complete passes through the community to collect branches. The completion of the cleanup coincides with the scheduled Wednesday closure of the city's temporary Third Street branch drop-off site.

HURON, S.D. - The temporary tree and branch drop-off location on Third Street will close to the public on Wednesday evening. Residents looking to dispose of large branches will now be required to use the solid waste facility located at 1552 Fourth St. S.E. during regular business hours. Smaller branches that fit within residential green containers will continue to be collected during weekly trash pickups, or residents can utilize the drop-off kiosk.

Downtown Huron to receive new sculptural art

HURON, S.D. - Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution and donation agreement to place a new sculpture titled "Paul Rivere" in downtown Huron at 333 Dakota Ave. S. The piece is being donated directly by the artist, who will travel from Iowa to assist with the installation. The liability agreement mirrors a previous donation by Rhonda and Doug Kludt, with the city assuming liability for the artwork only after it is fully installed. The downtown committee hopes to have the installation completed before late September.

Permits shifted for rescheduled 'Dusting Off Dakota' event

HURON, S.D. - The city commission approved a date change for consumption permits associated with the upcoming "Dusting Off Dakota" event. Originally scheduled for July 3, the permits for the event are now legally valid for Sept. 26. The request was submitted jointly by the Community Improvement Committee and three local businesses, allowing the rescheduled event to proceed with the proper alcohol and consumption permitting.

Police department to host annual National Night Out

HURON, S.D. - The Huron Police Department will host its annual National Night Out at Campbell Park on Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. Police Chief Derek Layher invited the community to attend the event, which is organized annually by Capt. Mark Johnson. The evening will feature food trucks with items available for purchase, family activities and participation from various community organizations aimed at fostering positive relationships between law enforcement and local residents.

Volunteers needed for upcoming State Senior Games

HURON, S.D. - Parks and Recreation Director Chad Schroder issued a call for volunteers to assist with the State Senior Games, scheduled to take place in Huron from Thursday, Aug. 6, through Sunday, Aug. 9. Schroder noted that the city's primary need for assistance is on Saturday for track and field events, which will be held in nearby Wolsey. Coordination for the event is being handled through the Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau, and residents are encouraged to reach out to help fill the remaining volunteer slots by calling 605-352-0000.
