City nears completion of massive storm cleanup as FEMA arrival looms
HURON, S.D. — Street superintendent Phil McCaskell reported that city crews are wrapping up the bulk of the tree and debris cleanup following a severe July storm, having hauled 641 semi-loads of debris to the Third Street drop-off site. Federal Emergency Management Agency representatives are scheduled to arrive Wednesday to assess the damage, which includes the solid waste facilities and city hangar. The Third Street public drop-off site will remain open through the upcoming weekend before closing permanently for the season to allow residents a final opportunity to dispose of storm debris.
State Fair recovery continues following July tornado
HURON, S.D. — State Fair manager Peggy Besch praised the use of state inmate crews who assisted with clearing fallen trees from the fairgrounds following a July 2 tornado. Despite the two-week delay caused by storm cleanup, the fairgrounds are returning to normal ahead of the 141st State Fair this September. Besch also announced major fundraising initiatives to replace aging infrastructure, including a $500,000 goal for new horse stalls and matching funds up to $60,000 from the South Dakota Pork Producers for new swine pens.
Groundbreaking scheduled for new hotel in southeast Huron
HURON, S.D. — A new hotel project is officially underway, with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for July 27 at the corner of 26th Street and Kansas Avenue Southeast. Greater Huron Development Corporation representative Ted Haeder announced the milestone, noting that preliminary dirt work at the site has already begun.
Housing assessment highlights need for accelerated residential development
HURON, S.D. — A recent 188-page housing needs assessment conducted by the Augustana Research Institute revealed that Huron must build 17 to 18 new owner-occupied units and 16 to 19 rental units annually to meet high-growth targets. Ted Haeder of the Greater Huron Development Corporation outlined multiple ongoing initiatives to address this shortfall, including the sale of 25 lots in the Southtown development, a continued partnership with the local high school's career and technical education program to build homes and the planned acquisition of the Lake Heights addition on North Circle Drive for future residential development.
Large-scale metal shredding facility coming to Huron area
HURON, S.D. — A new metal recycling operation featuring a large-scale metal shredder is slated to open west of Huron city limits in 2026. Ted Haeder informed the commission that dirt work has already commenced at the former Huron Dressed Beef site for the facility, which will shred metal down into small pieces for shipping to further recyclers. The operation is expected to bring an industrial capability to the area that is one of the first of its kind in South Dakota.
New youth enrichment center approved for Dakota Avenue North
HURON, S.D. — The city commission unanimously approved a variance to allow a family enrichment and youth center to operate at 53 Dakota Ave. N., an area currently zoned for general industrial use. While the variance falls under childcare facility language in the city code, city planner Barry Cranston clarified that the business operates primarily as an event space for parent-child classes, teen events and art classes rather than a traditional daily daycare facility.
