Commission approves crosswind runway closure for airport upgrades
HURON, S.D. — The Huron City Commission approved a tentative 30-day closure of the Huron Regional Airport's crosswind runway starting July 6 to accommodate the final phase of a parallel taxiway construction project. City officials noted that the primary runway will remain open and unaffected during the project, which is funded by federal and state dollars. The new parallel taxiway will allow aircraft to safely pull off to the side after landing, significantly improving traffic flow at the airport.
Fourth Street water main replacement finished under budget
HURON, S.D. — A three-year water main replacement project on Fourth Street is officially complete and came in under budget. The city commission approved the final pay request of $310,581 to Menning Excavation on Tuesday, along with a deductive change order that returned $16,746 to the city for unused project materials. Water Superintendent Rob Rieger reported that the final two blocks of the project were the only water main replacements scheduled for this summer.
Residential greenhouses now permitted in Huron
HURON, S.D. — Huron residents can now legally construct small, noncommercial greenhouses in their backyards following the city commission's unanimous approval of a new zoning ordinance. The second reading of the accessory structures ordinance amendment permits greenhouses of up to 100 square feet — essentially a 10-by-10-foot structure — in all R1 through R5 residential districts, provided they meet standard property setback requirements.
City secures 25-year lease for Little League complex
HURON, S.D. — The city commission authorized a 25-year lease agreement with the Huron School District to maintain the Roger Kasa Little League Complex. Under the terms of the agreement, which was previously signed by the school board, the city will pay a nominal fee of $1 to lease the property. Parks and Recreation Director Chad Schroder called the renewal a "win-win" that protects the school district's future development needs while securing an essential facility for the community's youth baseball programs.
Commission approves police presence for holiday soccer tournament
HURON, S.D. — The Huron Police Department will provide on-site security for the Karen Soccer Tournament at Pepsi Soccer Fields over the July 4 holiday weekend. The city commission approved a police services agreement with the Karen Association, representing Huron's Karen community originally from Myanmar, which will pay the city's standard off-duty rate of $70 per hour for a uniformed officer. The department is actively working to fill the security shifts for the two-day event, continuing a four-year partnership with the tournament organizers.
Dusting Off Dakota receives outdoor alcohol permit
HURON, S.D. — Downtown Huron will host Dusting Off Dakota this Friday evening, featuring local events and a street dance. To accommodate the festivities, the city commission approved a special event permit for The Vault, allowing the establishment to serve alcohol outside its building from 4:30 p.m. to midnight on July 3. City officials encouraged residents to attend the downtown revitalization event while urging caution and check-ins on vulnerable neighbors regarding the week's extreme heat and humidity.
Summer fireworks displays approved at state fairgrounds
HURON, S.D. — The city commission approved a series of public fireworks display permits for events at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds this summer. The Huron Fire Department will host the city's primary Independence Day display on July 4 following the grandstand races. Additional public displays by private vendors were also approved for July 18 and Aug. 1 at the fairgrounds.
Independence Day holiday alters solid waste collection schedule
HURON, S.D. — Huron residents will see a shift in their typical garbage collection schedule this week due to the Independence Day holiday. City offices and the solid waste department rubble site will be closed on Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4. Friday's regular garbage, recycling, and grass collection will instead be completed on Wednesday, July 1. Residents are asked to place their containers out the night before, as trucks will not be rerouted.
