Memorial Park baseball project progresses
HURON, S.D. — The Huron City Commission approved a $96,474 payment to a project contractor for architectural and engineering fees related to a Memorial Park baseball facility project. The payment was approved just ahead of a scheduled groundbreaking ceremony at the site. The upcoming park renovations will feature a new building, a player development center and updated concession stands for the community.
Fire station addition proposed
HURON, S.D. — Following the conclusion of regular business, the city commission adjourned into a formal work session to discuss a proposed addition to the South Fire Station. The preliminary proposal, brought forward by Huron Ambulance, outlines potential facility expansions to better accommodate emergency response needs. No official action was taken during the regular meeting.
Commission considers new residential greenhouse rules
HURON, S.D. — Residents looking to grow their own produce may soon face fewer regulatory hurdles, as the city commission approved the first reading of an ordinance allowing small greenhouses in most residential districts. The proposed rule permits greenhouses of up to 100 square feet in R1 through R5 zones without requiring property owners to seek a variance. City Planner Barry Cranston noted that the size limit complies with local fire codes and addresses an increase in public inquiries driven by rising grocery costs.
New Airport Board member appointed
HURON, S.D. — Kraig Steinhoff was appointed to the Airport Board, filling a vacancy left by the resignation of a departing member. The appointment was approved unanimously as part of the city commission's consent agenda. The city commission also utilized the consent agenda to approve summer parade permits for a church-sponsored road race and the Ravine Lake Triathlon, both scheduled for the morning of July 25.
Juneteenth holiday alters solid waste collection
HURON, S.D. — Huron residents will see changes to city services in observance of the Juneteenth holiday on Friday, June 19. All city offices will be closed. The Solid Waste Department's rubble site will close Friday and Saturday, reopening Monday at 8 a.m. Garbage, recycling and grass collection normally scheduled for Friday will be preemptively completed on Wednesday, June 17. Residents are advised to set out their containers Tuesday night, as trucks will not be rerouted.
Educators praise city-supported master's program
HURON, S.D. — Two local educators addressed the city commission during the public forum to express gratitude for the city's ongoing support of a Northern State University higher education program at Huron Community Campus. Representing the eighth cohort of master-prepared educators, they stated that the program's reduced cost and local convenience allowed them to earn advanced degrees while continuing to teach full-time in the Huron School District.
