Weinreis defeats Carr in city commission race

HURON, S.D. — The Huron City Commission officially canvassed the 2026 municipal election results, confirming Drew Weinreis' victory over Josh Carr. Weinreis secured the seat with 815 votes to Carr's 773. The commission congratulated Weinreis on his successful bid and thanked Carr for running, noting the importance of giving residents a competitive choice at the polls.

Joint election yields strong voter turnout

HURON, S.D. — Voter turnout for the combined city and Beadle County election reached 27.7%, a significant increase compared to recent municipal elections. City officials reported that 27.7% of Huron's 7,443 registered voters cast ballots in the recent election. The commission noted the turnout was notably higher than the 12% participation seen in last year's standalone city election, attributing the boost to the consolidated ballot.

City inks agreement with Coborn's for plastic recycling storage

HURON, S.D. — The commission approved a memorandum of understanding with Coborn's to place a storage container for film plastics in the grocery store's parking lot. The container, repurposed from a 25-year-old city textile recycling program, will hold the collected soft plastics before they are weighed by the city and back-shipped on Coborn's delivery trucks. Solid Waste Superintendent Dale Fortin noted the agreement protects the city from liability for lot damage and keeps blowing plastics contained.

Officials clarify drop-off locations for soft plastic recycling

HURON, S.D. — Following the approval of the new storage container at Coborn's, the commission reminded residents that the grocery store lot is not a public drop-off site for soft plastics. The public must continue taking plastic grocery bags and film materials to three designated local collection sites: the Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau, the Huron Public Library and the Parks and Recreation office in the Huron Community Campus Center. The Huron Area Women Business Leaders will haul the collected materials from those three sites to the Coborn's container for shipping.

Juneteenth holiday alters garbage collection schedule

HURON, S.D. — The city announced schedule adjustments for solid waste collection and the rubble site in observance of the Juneteenth holiday. The rubble site will be closed Friday, June 19, and Saturday, June 20, reopening on Monday at 8 a.m. Residents who normally have their garbage, recycling and yard waste collected on Fridays will instead have their pickup moved to Wednesday, June 17, which aligns with the city's standard policy of moving all holiday collections to Wednesday of the corresponding week.
