Long-serving commissioner announces he will not seek re-election

HURON, S.D. — After serving on the Huron City Commission for 12 years, Commissioner Bryan Smith announced Tuesday that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming June race. Smith described his tenure as a "wonderful experience" but stated he is ready to end his run. The mayor thanked Smith for his service, specifically noting his vital role in the city's finance department, while reminding the public that Smith will continue to serve until his current term expires.

Petitions available for June municipal elections

HURON, S.D. — Petitions are now available for residents interested in running for open seats on the city commission, county commission and school board. City officials announced that candidates have until 5 p.m. March 24 to file their petitions for the election, which is scheduled for June. Residents interested in local government are encouraged to pick up a packet at city hall or access the forms online.

Solid waste department prepares for leadership transition

HURON, S.D. — In preparation for the upcoming retirement of Solid Waste Superintendent Dale Fortin, the commission authorized a recruitment and transition plan that includes hiring an assistant superintendent. Human Resources Manager Shanna Sterrett explained that the new hire will train under Fortin before assuming the top role. To manage costs, a vacant foreman position will remain unfilled, ensuring the department stays within its current budget structure.

Commission awards $1.29 million street paving contract

HURON, S.D. — The commission awarded a $1,289,517 contract to Asphalt Paving Materials Co. for the city's annual street milling and overlay project. City Engineer Brett Runge noted the bid came in under the budgeted amount of $1.29 million. The project includes maintenance on various city streets, paving of Ninth Street West from the softball fields to the truck route, and the Broadland Creek Golf Course parking lot.

Agreement signed for future Highway 37 reconstruction

HURON, S.D. — The city approved a maintenance and encroachment agreement with the South Dakota Department of Transportation regarding the reconstruction of South Dakota Highway 37 from Ninth Street South to 21st Street South. While the project is tentatively scheduled for 2027, City Engineer Brett Runge noted the city must coordinate sanitary sewer replacements with the state's timeline. The agreement includes provisions for traffic signals, a shared-use path and financial reimbursements between the city and the state.

Equipment purchases approved despite budget overages

HURON, S.D. — The commission approved the purchase of a new one-ton truck for the traffic department and an asphalt float for the street department, despite both items coming in over budget. The truck, purchased from Lamb Motor Co. for approximately $68,500 after upfitting, exceeded the budget by $3,000, while the asphalt float exceeded its allocation by approximately $1,300. City Engineer Brett Runge confirmed that the additional funds for both purchases will be drawn from city reserves.

Design-build firm selected for new baseball facility

HURON, S.D. — PCIC Construction was selected to lead the design-build of the new Memorial Park Baseball Building and Player Development Center with a maximum budget of $1.2 million. The proposal was chosen over a competing bid from a Sioux Falls firm. While the facility will no longer include a FEMA-certified storm shelter, it will feature a reinforced block structure for safety. Construction is slated for completion by late October or early November to accommodate the winter season.

Strict deadlines set for Splash Central pool repairs

HURON, S.D. — To ensure the city water park opens on schedule, commissioners approved a $90,205 contract with Global Specialty Contractors, Inc. to repair finishes at Splash Central. The contract requires the contractor to prioritize the lazy river and leisure pool. If the 50-meter pool cannot be completed by the May 15 deadline, work must be delayed until fall. The contractor is liable for lost revenue if the facility fails to open on time due to construction delays.

City reclaims lot in Broadland Creek development

HURON, S.D. — The commission accepted a quit claim deed returning ownership of Lot 15 in the Broadland Creek residential subdivision to the city. City Attorney Barry Cranston explained that the previous buyers did not begin construction within the required 36-month window, citing rising interest rates and construction costs. The property will return to the city's inventory for future sale.

Hockey team honored for state championship

HURON, S.D. — The city commission honored the Huron Hockey Association Pee Wee team for winning the state tournament on their home ice. Coaches Troy Matke, Nick Reimer and Alex Solem joined the players to receive congratulations. Commissioners praised the team's dedication, noting that their victory was the result of hard work throughout the season.
