Hutchinson firefighters spent about 25 minutes knocking down a fully involved detached garage in the 300 block of West Avenue A on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The department said hose placement and defensive operations held damage to the home just west of the garage to a minimum, allowing those residents to return home.

Crews were dispatched at 6:24 p.m. for a reported structure fire with people possibly trapped, according to a release from Division Chief of Training/Safety Jesse Martin. Hutchinson Police units arrived ahead of the fire department and reported a large detached garage fire threatening homes, with no occupants trapped.

According to the release, firefighters worked the fire defensively to knock down the blaze and protect the exposures west of the garage while coordinating a search of the neighboring structure for anyone inside.

Reno County EMS evaluated two people near the incident for non-life-threatening issues, and both refused transport, according to the release. The release does not report any firefighter injuries.

According to Citizen Journal's prior coverage, at least three other garage fires in the Hutchinson area have drawn a department response since May 2025, including an east-side garage fire in October 2025 and a garage blaze on Avenue C in December 2025.

The Hutchinson fire marshal is investigating, and no cause has been determined. The release gives no damage estimate for the garage or the neighboring home.
