Heavy rainfall threatens localized street flooding across Hutchinson
Public works crews clear storm drains as city infrastructure actively moves water through the community
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Heavy rainfall hitting Hutchinson on Friday and potentially extending into the weekend could lead to temporary street flooding and ponding in low-lying areas, city officials warned.
Although the intense downpours have the potential to overwhelm storm drains during peak precipitation, the city's 94-mile storm sewer system, drainage ditches and levees are actively moving large volumes of water safely through the Reno County community.
To mitigate the impact, public works crews have been proactively clearing the city's 4,828 curb inlets, basins and related structures of debris and inspecting infrastructure to ensure the system continues to flow as quickly as possible.
City officials urged residents to slow down, use extreme caution and avoid driving through standing water as the weather event continues. The local advisory coincides with National Weather Service hazardous weather outlooks predicting localized heavy rain for the region.
Mayor Scott Meggers and city administrators reminded residents that temporary ponding is expected when rain falls faster than the infrastructure can immediately collect it, but they assured the public that the broader flood-control measures remain highly effective and are operating exactly as designed.
