MANHATTAN, Kan. — Visitors to Jeffery Energy Center Make-up Lake in Pottawatomie County are urged to avoid the water and keep pets away after state health and wildlife officials issued a blue-green algae watch advisory June 18. The harmful algal blooms, which can resemble foam or brightly colored paint floating on the water's surface, produce toxins that can cause vomiting, rashes, fever and respiratory issues if ingested, touched or inhaled. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks advise anyone exposed to the water to rinse the affected area immediately with clean, fresh water and report any subsequent human or animal illnesses at the KDHE website.
